ASSINA

ASSINA – By JBros

He loves me…he loves me not…he loves me…he loves me not…
Assina walked aimlessly around, trying to take it all in…the waterfall her favorite spot where she took solace…today, there was no solace…the chirping birds…the water splashing along the river banks…the quiet environment in contrast to the turmoil raging within her…the king of the castle was the object of her thoughts. She feels love in her heart for someone who could never …be hers. She was but a lowly servant in the castle…how could she have gotten the attention of the powerful king. She did not think she was his type…she was a servant of all people…
One sunny afternoon, she was in danger of being late with her chores…it was a day when nothing worked out right for her…He saw her struggling and helped her…Her king helped her even though he did not have to..she was so thankful and grateful. Then she noticed he would show up in unexpected places, noticed his glances when he thought she was not looking. He would order that she be given extra portions of food…he was so kind and thoughtful…so supportive in so many ways…so affectionate and passionate…Sometimes thinking of him made her heart race like a thousand running horses…she didn’t plan to fall in love, it just happened..how could she tell her she loved him…an abomination for a servant to approach the King without being summoned…her head would surely be on a platter if she did this…

Bang!!! The sound from the farmer’s Dane gun disrupted her thoughts…she hurriedly picked up her calabash and started running…she was going to be late again and today Yesin, her leader would not be merciful…he had looked the other side several times but not today..Because today was the king’s ball…so no nonsense would be tolerated. Today, the king would announce his betrothed…when darkness falls

There were stories going around. Maybe it was Laty, the best dancer in the kingdom. Some thought it would be Relia, who sang like the angels. Others said it had to be Dulia, the most beautiful damsel in the land. The biggest contender, however, was Jamlia, the princess of the Nakodi Kingdom. She was not the most beautiful of them all, but certainly the richest and the most powerful.

She shuddered as she thought about Jamlia. She met Jamlia once but it was not a pleasant experience. She was cleaning the floor in the great room when Jamlia entered the room. You must be Assina…I have heard a lot about you. My palace spies told me the king has been giving you special treatments…well; don’t think too much about that. He is a very generous king…a very wise and handsome man…but he belongs to me. You see, his father and my father made a pact that we, the children, would marry each other. So my dear servant, don’t even try to raise your hopes. I will crush anyone that stands in my way. With that, she went out of the room. Assina still shivered at the thought of her cold words.

Oh dear, she thought…I hope my imagination and thoughts will not get me into trouble. She began to pick up the pace and she raced back towards the kingdom. She then noticed her surrounding was unusually quiet. Then out of the woods came four burly looking men, walking menacingly towards her. Before she could react, they grabbed her and took her off into the woods, screaming and shouting. She cried out for help but there was no one in sight…

They took her to a run down shed, tied her hands and feet. she shuddered wondering what type of faith awaited her. who were her captors and what did they want from her, she wondered…

“Master, let us make this job quick and easy”. We were paid well to carry out this task and she does not like failures. keep quiet, the master said..I determine what happens, not you. I am sorry but…”shut up” and no buts. When I am ready, we will deal with her. Right now, go and get me some food to eat and water from the spring.

She must have fallen asleep as a big thud on her head woke her up, almost causing her to black out for a moment. So you think a slave and pauper like you can marry a king..who do you think you are? Do you think you are special or have special powers? she was wondering what to say when she got another slap across the face. The effect of the slap sent her across the room, hitting her head against the wall.

The master drew out a shiny sword, saying “say your last prayers to your creator”, today marks the end of your journey here on earth. he started walking in slow deliberate steps towards her. she closed her eyes and said a short prayer, waiting for the sword to end her miserable life. The master raised the sword up, ready to strike..”the Koroma gang is here!!!the Koroma gang is here!!! there was instant pandemonium in the camp..” to your posts” shouted master..and they all scrambled to their assigned places…

Assina could here gunshots and clashing of swords in the camp. She soon realized everyone had forgotten her as the battle raged on. she quietly picked up her shoes and stared running foe her dear life. She ran through the woods, not caring about tree branches that tore through her body. She did not stop until she got to the outskirts of her village, tired and haggard from her grueling journey. As she sat down by the old willow tree to catch her breath, she heard the sound of celebration in the distance. what is going on she thought?

she saw two maidens walking by and asked them. they looked at her with misgivings, considering she looked absolutely mad..where have you been? of course, it is the sound of the celebration of the kings wedding. he has chosen his bride and the kingdom is celebrating.

Assina screamed..a loud sound that was heard through the woods. it sounded like the cry of a wounded lion..and sent the animals scattering around. The two maidens ran away, fearing the mad woman was going to bite them. she started weeping..she wept for love found and lost..love that did not have time to blossom..love that died a premature death..she felt her heart literally break into pieces..she wept until there was no more tears. surely, life was not worth living again..how could she live without her true love…how could she sing a song when the source of her joy was out of her reach. some hours ago, she almost lost her life because of the king…now she felt her life was slipping away from her..then she fainted.

Storried Assina

She felt the breeze of the ocean on her cheek. All around her, people were happy. Jubilant as the boarded the great water beast..a ship it was called. she felt lonely as she considered her life and future. Beside her was Anakim, he had found her by the road, and tended to her. she would forever be grateful for him. she would try to love him but her heart still belonged to her King. They say only fools fall in love, she was by far the greatest fool on earth. not only did she fall in love, but it was love that could never be returned. she often wondered what it would have been like to be embraced by the King, to be openly loved by him..to be able to tell him she loved him..and to hear him tell her he loved her, face to face..she excused herself and went to the other part of the ship..and she wept..as she wept, the clouds darkened and it started to rain as if the heavens were weeping with her..she lost track of time as she wept for what would have been..she wept because she was not born into a royal family..she wept because she was not born into a rich family..then a song formed in her mind…

how I long to be near you
my heart longs for your love
how could I live without your love
the birds of the air have found their true love
the young cub is with his princess, but I cannot reach my love
Chorus: oh love so amazing
but it was never meant to be
I’ve spent countless hours dreaming of your love
I heard you say you love me countless times in my dream
you are the first thing I thing about when I am awake
hear you calling me through the day
oh, if only I could be with you right now
Chorus: oh love so amazing
but it was never meant to be

Bridge: if you find my love, tell him I still love him..tell him I will forever love him..I will cherish him forever

*********
After many hours, she got up. she would go to the land of milk and honey and change her life around. her children would never have to go through this in their lives..she would toil day and night to give her children a better chance in life..after all, she was going to the land of opportunity, the land where the sun never sets..the land of hope…the land of the brave..Amalika? Malira?..oh ..America..that is what Anakim had called it..the land where dreams come true. yes, she was ready for America, the land of her dreams…

The end
