COVER YOUR EARS

COVER YOUR EARS – By Dean O. Arutoghor

Thud, thud, thud, the headboard bangs rhythmically against the wall. I grit my teeth. There is a lone thud followed by six more thuds in quick succession. Then there is a pause. Oh, is that it?
Thud, thud.
Damn it.
Thud, thud, thud, thud…It continues. This time, more energised. Faster. Louder.
I grit my teeth.
Eventually, I scream but I am drowned out by the thudding noise and their grunting.
That’s it! I can’t take it anymore.

I storm upstairs to tell dad to keep the noise down.
When I barge into their bedroom, mum is startled and drops the big wood she is holding. Dad yells and curses under his breath as it lands on his toes. He also drops the hammer he is holding and it only misses mum’s toes by an inch.
“I am trying to study for my exams tomorrow but I can’t concentrate with all the noise,” I say sternly as I stand over them. “Can’t you fix the broken bed tomorrow instead?”
