WHAT IF THE FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN HAD KILLED YOU

By Gbade Adeyemo George

Ade is an ambitious young boy. He is vibrant, intelligent, a goal getter and one who can fight for what he believes. He started his life’s journey on a very good note with a dream of becoming the president of this nation.

Being mindful of the future, he will do anything to achieve his dreams. He was told that education is the fastest road to success and this built his courage even more. On his white shirt and blue short, he runs to school every day believing that tomorrow has so much in store for him. Ade remained dogged.

Ade finally became a graduate at the age of 22. Few months later, he got his NYSC posting letter to serve in Cross River state. He smiled so obviously, even the blind could feel the unending expression on his face. He had a sleepless night and waited for the breaking of a new day in excitement.

Finally, it was 5:00 a. m., and Ade was ready to move. Travelling to Cross River, he met this beautiful young lady. He pretended not to see her but she had a mouthwatering beauty. He wriggled with his heart but at some point he broke the silence and said, ‘Hi’. She replied, “What took you so long”? He could only smile and then she said, “I am Christabel and I’m on my way to the NYSC camp for orientation”. Ade said “Wow!!!, that’s my destination too you know.” He liked her and soon they became lovers. Two weeks into the orientation camp, they found themselves in a dark crook. Ade was telling her how much she meant to him. He even said she is a gift only heaven can give. He further told her that he loves her slim shoulders and slender legs with well-manicured frame. She smiled and said, “Say no more, make me a woman”. He became thunderstruck and stared at her amazingly. Her nipples shoot out, he could see through her white shirt, he lost his thought and fell for it. It soon became a habit as continued their carnal knowledge of each other even after the camp.

Soon, Ade loses weight and falls sick almost every two weeks. He saw a flyer containing an information on HIV/AIDS syndrome, its causes, symptoms and prevention. He cried when he read through it and remembered that he didn’t use a protective device in the course of sexual intercourse. He lived with the fear of the unknown, until he finally decided to visit a doctor. On seeing him the doctor asked why he is looking insipid. He said that his girlfriend died after a brief illness and she had the same symptoms. The doctor took a sample of his blood to the laboratory for an HIV test. At the end of the day, he was confirmed negative. Out of joy he burst into tears, then the doctor said “WHAT IF the fear of the unknown had killed you?”
