#SMVSC- OCTOBER 2017 – SUBMISSION 1 – SWEAT AT DAWN AND STRESS AT DUSK

By Ann Fina

In her desperate search for daily bread,
She toils from dawn to dusk,
Under the scorching sun,
With her aching back
And empty stomach,
With her blistered hands
And rivulets of her sweats falling like raindrops.

At dusk, a stipend follows her home,
But she meets him drunk as usual,
Kids with bulging tummy and thin legs,
Run towards her like they have seen their saviour.
They are nine in number,
All looking hungry and drained.

She glances at her drunk husband,
And the ritual plays in her head.
Cook,
Serve him dinner,
Behind the four walls of the bedroom,
She opens her legs,
And with few thrusts, he slumps and sleeps off.
The tenth baby is made.

At dawn the next day, she departs,
And if she is lucky,
A stipend will follow her home.
