TAKE YOUR MEDICATION AND SLEEP

TAKE YOUR MEDICATION AND SLEEP – By Hetty Hembadoon Orkuma

I once went to someone’s house unannounced.

I was dating one Air Force dude that year. I called him and he said he wasn’t feeling very well, I said I’d come over and he quickly refused saying he was just going to take his medication and go to bed. I said OK. My mind said OK fire!

One hour later I arrive his house unannounced one Sisi answers the door wearing his shorts and tee. She was cooking. I enter his bedroom and change into his T-shirt too, long enough I don’t need shorts and join her in the kitchen hardly saying a word to him.

I asked his ‘boy’ to go buy fresh fish. She was cooking jollof rice I was going to make pepper soup to compliment it. I was the only one talking. She was mumbling replies to my very unnecessary stories and questions he kept moving from kitchen to bedroom to sitting back to kitchen.

Rice is ready. Pepper soup is cooking. Sisi and him are in the bedroom he talking she crying. They are both speaking the same language, I am the outsider there. My turn to move from kitchen to bedroom back to kitchen.

Eventually, she decides to leave or is convinced to leave. 9pm. She comes to tell me she is leaving and I say but she hasn’t eaten she says she is not hungry. By the time she is ready I have dished rice and pepper soup in plastics and put it in a nylon bag and escorted them to the car. He is taking her home.

He returns 2 hours later. Starts calling me nonsense names like Boss lady yadda yadda yaa I smile foolishly ask him to change the sheets he said nothing happened on them. Change it still. We sit down to talk he saying things that don’t make sense, me I am trying to kill time.

Before 1 a.m I ask him to go shower so we can eat and sleep. He goes in, I enter the kitchen carry the remaining rice and pepper soup quietly leave the house to meet the taxi I asked to arrive there by 1 a.m and go home.

I actually get home before he starts calling to ask where I am.

You are sick. Take your medication and sleep.
